Every week, a brand or a marketer asks us some version of the same question. What should this role cost? Is this offer fair? Should we hire someone, use a freelancer or bring in an agency?
India has salary guides, but most stop at full-time roles in large companies. So we built the benchmark we wanted. The SuperStuff Pay & Pricing Benchmark 2026–27 brings full-time salaries, freelancer rates and agency pricing for India's marketing and creative industry together in one place.
It draws on what 22,000+ marketing and creative professionals, 5,600+ freelancers and 790 agencies shared with SuperStuff through 2026. Here are six findings that stood out.

As covered in ET BrandEquity and Social Samosa.
1. Where you work matters as much as what you do
A Head of Marketing earns a median ₹48 lakh at a large Indian company and ₹21.5 lakh at an agency. That's more than twice the pay for the same title.
Below Head level, in-house employers pay roughly alike. Managers earn ₹18–21 lakh at scale-ups, large Indian companies and MNCs. The real divide is between in-house teams and agencies: agencies pay about a third less at junior and mid levels, and more than half less at Head level.

2. Product marketing pays best, and Mumbai leads
Product marketing is the best-paid marketing role at every level. A Product Marketing Manager earns a median ₹23 lakh, 2.4× a Social Media Manager.
By city, Mumbai pays the most: a Manager earns a median ₹15.5 lakh. Bengaluru (₹15 lakh) and Delhi NCR (₹14.5 lakh) follow closely. Outside the big metros, salaries drop by about a third.
3. Job switchers expect a big jump
The median job switcher asks for a 34% hike, and 6 in 10 ask for 30% or more.
Senior talent is also open to more flexible ways of working. 36% of Heads and Directors are open to fractional or freelance roles, against 25% of Executives. For startups that need senior thinking without a full-time senior salary, that's good news.
4. Hire, freelance or agency? It depends on what you need
We priced one function four ways. Running social media for a year costs about:
- ₹9 lakh with a freelancer
- ₹12 lakh with one full-time hire
- ₹16 lakh and up with an agency
- ₹30 lakh to build that agency's team in-house

A single hire costs the least per person. An agency gives you a strategist, a designer, a copywriter and an account lead for up to half of what that team would cost in-house. That makes it the most efficient way to get a complete set of capabilities.
Hire when you need ownership and deep context. Use a freelancer when the budget is tight and the work is well defined. Bring in an agency when you need range and output from week one.
5. What top brands spend
Starting agency retainers of ₹75,000 to ₹5 lakh a month suit startups and SMBs. Large brands typically invest ₹5–20 lakh a month on social media alone, and more when the work is video- or production-heavy. These figures are agency fees, with media spend excluded.
The biggest driver of that difference is the calibre of talent and creativity a brand is buying.

The same holds for full-time talent. At large brands, typical offers start at ₹12–15 lakh for Executives and reach ₹60–65 lakh for Heads and Directors. CMOs at large consumer and tech companies earn ₹1.5–2.5 crore and more.

6. AI is now part of everyday marketing work
9 in 10 marketers and creatives now use AI tools at work, up from a majority 18 months ago. ChatGPT is still the most-used tool, and Claude is now second, followed by Gemini, Canva and Perplexity. Content, design and social teams lead adoption, and video tools are the fastest-moving category.

From SuperStuff's Leadership team
"Every week someone asks us what a role should cost, or whether to hire, use a freelancer or bring in an agency. Nobody had put those answers in one place for India, so we built it. The clearest message in the data is that quality pays. The best people and teams sit at the top of every range for a reason, and the brands that win their categories are the ones willing to pay for them."
— Pranay Swarup, Co-founder & CEO, SuperStuff
"Agencies remain the most efficient way for a brand to build a complete marketing team. What changes at scale is the calibre of talent and creativity being bought, which is why top brands typically invest five to twenty lakh a month in social media alone. We also hope this report starts a serious conversation about pay for senior agency talent, because that gap matters if great people are to build long careers in agencies."
— Sonia Khurana, COO & Partner, SuperStuff
